How ThinkNCollab Works Like Docker Internally
We didn't just build a lightweight wrapper. ThinkNCollab Shell embeds a 6-layer native runtime that speaks OCI, executes OCI images, and responds to Docker commands without any background VM.
Native OCI Distribution Engine
Implements the OCI Distribution Spec v1.1 and Docker Registry API v2 directly in Node.js. thinknsh pull pulls from Docker Hub, GHCR, AWS ECR, or GCP GCR, unpacks tar layer blobs directly to rootfs, and verifies sha256 checksums without Docker Daemon.
Kernel-Level Sandbox & MicroVM Isolation
Instead of spinning up a heavyweight 4GB Linux VM, we enforce real kernel isolation primitives per operating system: macOS uses Apple Virtualization (tnc-vz MicroVM + crun) with sub-second boot, 60MB idle RAM & VirtioFS; Linux uses Native Kernel Namespaces (unshare / crun - PID, mount, net) + cgroups v2; Windows uses direct WSL2 process execution.
Sub-Second CoW Volume Snapshots
Traditional Docker volumes require exporting multi-gigabyte tar files. ThinkNCollab leverages filesystem Copy-on-Write (APFS cp -cR on macOS and Btrfs/XFS --reflink on Linux) to create zero-cost, instant volume clones in under 15ms.
Drop-in Docker CLI Shim
Keep your muscle memory and existing CI scripts intact. Running thinknsh docker install places a transparent shim at /usr/local/bin/docker that translates commands like docker run, docker ps, and docker compose directly to thinknsh.
Docker REST API Socket Daemon
Need to use VS Code Dev Containers or Testcontainers in unit tests? thinknsh docker socket start exposes an on-demand UNIX socket at ~/.tnc/docker.sock providing the Docker Engine REST API (v1.41) backed 100% by ThinkNCollab's native engine!
Multi-Service Compose & Internal DNS
Run complete microservice stacks defined in docker-compose.yml or thinkncollab.yml. Features port publishing, bridge networking, internal service DNS resolution, and dependency ordering with zero Docker daemon.
Interactive Terminal Execution

Every Command in ThinkNCollab Shell V2
Your exhaustive guide to every native command, alias, and capability available in thinknsh.
thinknsh pull <image>
Pulls OCI image from Docker Hub, GHCR, or ECR without Docker installed. Extracts layers to local rootfs.
thinknsh pull postgres:16thinknsh run [options] <image>
Runs an OCI container or blueprint script inside an isolated process sandbox with port bindings and env vars.
thinknsh run -p 6379:6379 redis:alpinethinknsh compose <up|down|ps|logs>
Docker Compose equivalent. Orchestrates multi-container stacks with bridge networking and internal DNS.
thinknsh compose up -dthinknsh docker install
Installs /usr/local/bin/docker shim so standard docker <cmd> calls automatically run via thinknsh.
thinknsh docker installthinknsh docker socket start
Spawns Docker Engine REST API socket daemon at ~/.tnc/docker.sock for VS Code Dev Containers and Testcontainers.
thinknsh docker socket startthinknsh snapshot create <name>
Sub-second Copy-on-Write volume snapshot using APFS (macOS) or Btrfs/XFS (Linux) with 0 extra disk penalty.
thinknsh snapshot create pre-migrationthinknsh push <target>
Pushes local container capsules to AWS ECR, GCP GCR, Docker Hub or exports OCI tarball for Kubernetes/kubectl.
thinknsh push --export myapp:v1thinknsh dev [options]
Spawns workspace dev server inside an OS-native sandbox with automatic port forwarding and memory caps.
thinknsh dev --port 3000 --cmd "npm run dev"thinknsh ps
Lists all active and frozen sandboxes, process IDs, ports, isolation engines (Seatbelt/unshare), and memory.
thinknsh psthinknsh freeze <sandbox-id>
Instantly freezes process via SIGSTOP / cgroups freezer. Reclaims 100% CPU and memory with 0 RAM footprint.
thinknsh freeze my-sandboxthinknsh resume <sandbox-id>
Resumes a frozen sandbox process instantly (sub-millisecond wake-up) right where it left off.
thinknsh resume my-sandboxthinknsh exec <id> <cmd...>
Executes arbitrary command inside the sandbox rootfs environment with active environment variables.
thinknsh exec my-sandbox -- ls -lathinknsh logs <id> [-f]
Stream stdout/stderr logs from isolated background sandboxes in real time.
thinknsh logs my-sandbox -fthinknsh service start postgres
Starts native host PostgreSQL cluster with sub-second initialization and <15MB RAM footprint (0 Docker VM).
thinknsh service start postgres -p 5432thinknsh service start redis
Runs Redis cache locally or in sandbox with automatic dump.rdb state preservation and <8MB RAM footprint.
